Craving something crispy, fresh, and bursting with flavor? Let me introduce you to Tuna Tostadas— one of the Mexican snacks that’s practically a party on a plate! Picture this: crunchy corn tortillas, creamy chipotle mayo, and melt-in-your-mouth fresh tuna. Drooling yet?
These tasty tostadas got their start at Contramar in Mexico City back in 1998, where Chef Gabriela Camara took a chance on tuna, which wasn’t exactly a rockstar fish at the time. She combined a Mexican snack, Japanese, and Italian flavors to create a dish that has since become a fan Mexico snacks favorite all over Mexico. It’s no wonder they’re still so popular today—simple, fresh, and absolutely delicious!
Here’s a fun hack for you: If you can’t find crispy tortillas (we’ve all been there), grab some taco shells, cut them in half, toss them in the oven, and voilà—instant tostadas! It’s a sneaky little trick to keep in your back pocket for when taco night goes a little off course.

How to Make The Easy Mexican Snacks Tuna Tostadas
- Slice the tuna thinly with a sharp knife and serve on a shallow plate. In a dish, combine the orange juice, lime juice, soy sauce, and extra virgin olive oil. Stir the marinade quickly before pouring it over the tuna slices, ensuring that they are equally covered. Place the tuna in the refrigerator for 5–7 minutes.
- Meanwhile, make the chipotle mayo by combining the mayo and the chipotle paste in a bowl and mixing with a spoon until the paste is thoroughly incorporated into the mayo. Set aside or refrigerate once finished.
- Open the hard shell tacos and use your hands to split them in half. Place them on a baking dish and bake for 3 to 4 minutes. When ready, remove from the oven and let cool.
- Meanwhile, prepare a frying pan with the vegetables over medium-high heat. Once heated, add a handful of leeks and sauté until golden brown. Move them around with a slotted spoon as they cook, then gently take them from the oil when done. Place them straight on a dish with a paper towel to absorb any extra grease, then cook the remaining leeks.
- When ready to serve, place a tablespoon of chipotle mayo in each hard taco shell and spread it evenly with the back of a spoon. Then, take the marinated tuna out of the fridge and arrange it on top of the mayo (2 to 3 slices per tostadas). Top the ahi tuna tostadas with fried crispy leeks and a piece of fresh avocado. Serve with lime wedges on the side.

Ingredients
- 300 grams sashimi grade tuna
- 1 orange, juice
- 1/2 lime, juice
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1/2 packet Gran Luchito Hard Shell Tacos
- 1 cup vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 leek, finely sliced into thin strips
- 1 ripe avocado, cut into slices
- 2 limes, cut into wedges
Instructions
- Prepare ingredients.
- Crisp the tortillas. Quickly fry tortillas in a pan with a little oil or bake in the oven until crispy to make a quick mexican snack.
- Drain and flake the tuna. If using fresh, dice into small cubes. Mix tuna with finely chopped onion, jalapeño (if using), lime juice, salt, and pepper
- Prepare the avocado. Mash the avocado, add salt and lime juice
- Assemble the tostadas. Spread mashed avocado on crispy tortillas, top with tuna mixture. Then garnish with fresh greens.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- Use corn tortillas for authenticity and better crispiness. Ensure they're fresh to avoid breaking when crisping. Don't overcook the tortillas; they should be golden and crispy, not burnt. If frying, use minimal oil to keep them light. If baking, watch closely as they can burn quickly.
- For canned tuna, drain well to avoid soggy tostadas. If using fresh tuna, consider briefly searing it for added flavor. Don't over-mix the tuna to maintain texture. Use ripe avocados for easy mashing and best flavor. Add lime juice immediately to prevent browning.
